China’s technology giant Huawei has required all its suppliers to reduce carbon emissions. It announced the new requirements at its 2022 Supplier Carbon Emission Reduction Conference held on May 24.
Ying Weimin, Huawei’s chief supply officer, said during the event, “Huawei has integrated green requirements into our procurement quality priority strategy and the entire procurement business process, and has clarified green requirements in all aspects of the entire process, including supplier certification, selection, site audits and performance management.”
As early as 2013, Huawei launched a pilot project for carbon emission reduction for suppliers, with more than 100 companies participating. In 2020, Huawei promoted TOP suppliers, who accounted for more than 80% of its purchase amount, to set carbon reduction targets.
In 2021, Huawei incorporated carbon reduction requirements into the whole process of supplier management, encouraging leading suppliers to achieve carbon neutrality ahead of schedule.
Huawei hopes all suppliers set feasible carbon reduction targets to work with Huawei to achieve green, low-carbon, and sustainable development of the entire supply chain, Ying said.
